Description

Weaving is one of the most ancient crafts, with deep history and tradition across the world. As far back as 2500 BC, people in diverse parts of the Americas have been using backstrap looms to design highly elaborate textiles. Made of wood and strings, the telar de cintura or backstrap loom is a simple, lightweight, and highly effective tool that wraps the weaver’s waist on one side and is held by a post on the other to achieve tension and stability. Still widely utilized in Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru, the telar de cintura  allows weavers to create complex works with sophisticated and vibrant patterns. 

Join artist and weaving expert Chika Cuy for this intensive, two-day workshop, and get up close with textiles from Cooper Hewitt’s collection. Participants will learn how to use a backstrap loom and create a small weaving sample, which they can take home to continue working.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

Program Length: 2 sessions, 3 hours each (Friday, April 21st and Saturday, April 22nd from 2:30- 5:30 P.M.)
Interactivity Level: High. This is a hands-on workshop where participants will work on their own waist loom.  
Intended Audience: High school and college students interested in textiles or trying out a new creative process.  

This program is held in collaboration with Mixteca, a community-based organization in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The program will be bilingual and translated from Spanish.   

PRÁCTICAS DE DISEÑO: TEJIDO

El tejido es una de las artesanías más antiguas, con tradiciones e historias profundas en muchas partes del mundo. Desde el año 2500 a.C. a lo largo del continente americano, el telar de cintura se ha utilizado para diseñar y fabricar textiles sumamente elaborados. Hecho de madera y cuerdas, el telar de cintura es una herramienta simple, ligera y altamente efectiva que en un extremo envuelve en la cintura de quien teje y en el otro es atado a un poste para darle tensión y estabilidad. En México, Guatemala y Perú este tipo de telar sigue siendo muy utilizado pues permite crear piezas complejas con patrones sofisticados y coloridos. 

Únete a la artista y experta en tejidos Chika Cuy y participa en este taller intensivo de dos días, donde también podrás conocer de cerca los textiles en la colección de Cooper Hewitt. Los participantes aprenderán a usar el telar de cintura y crearán una pequeña muestra de tejido para llevarse a casa y seguir trabajando. 

Los talleres de la serie Prácticas de diseño están dirigidos a estudiantes de 16 a 22 años. 

SOBRE EL PROGRAMA 

Duración: 2 sesiones, 3 horas cada una (viernes 22 de abril y sábado 22 de abril).

Nivel de interactividad: Alto. Este es un taller práctico donde los participantes trabajarán en su propio telar de cintura. 

Público: Estudiantes interesados en textiles o que quieren probar un nuevo proceso creativo.
